Day 1: Olympic Festivities are Starting

Today is the first day that we have started to take part in Olympic fun. We've been watching over the last 6 months ... or really the last 7 years ... as preparations have been underway for the big day. February 12th is when the fun really starts!

Last night was the grand opening of House of Switzerland at Bridges Restaurant on Granville Island. We arrived at Granville Island around 6:00 after taking that oh-so-fun Olympic Line. The party was already well underway. We approached from the back and at first it didn't look like much, but once we got around to the side where the Aqua Bus docks we saw that it was really cool looking. There's a great big picture of St. Moritz that you can take your photo in front of and lots of very Swiss decorations.

We were greeted by women baring chocolate, which always makes a good first impression. Then got our first pin - a wonderful red one with the cross in the middle. It's definitely a keeper.

The place was packed with folks eating really great looking cheese fondue and other delictables that I couldn't quite make out. Around the corner we met Globi, the Mickey Mouse of Switzerland. He's pretty adorable with his big yellow beak. Meanwhile, the band was playing a rousing redition of "Roll Out the Barrel"!

There's definitely a great spirit here and we'll be back for more. I mean I have to enter to win the oversized Lindt ball on February 27th.
